New Open Source Standard Turns Your PC into Game Console

“Pop in the disc, start the computer, and the machine boots right into the menu screen for managing memory sticks (thumb drives); then it
’s on to the game menu. No Windows. No typing. Nothing but game.”

And there is a rumor going around that there are no games for Linux! Here someone is using Linux to turn older computers into a console to play simple games that are a lot of fun and free on Linux. But if you are using windows and need a distraction, simply pop in a cd and let the games begin. Hopefully, this will lead to more people becoming aware about Linux and what it can and cannot do.

To all our loyal reader(s), sorry.

I think its safe to say we suck at this blogging thing. I have to admit it is a lot harder than i thought it would be. I figured: I like games, I like gadgets. HEY! Lets do a blog about games and gadgets. Heck, lets even call it gamesandgadgets. So far theres hasn’t been many games or gadgets.

I don’t know. Maybe me and PlayerTwo just aren’t cut for this. It sure is a time sink. Between work and a wife and kids, it sure is an effort to find the time to blog. And i’m not short on content. I’ve got tons of opinions on gaming. PS3’s immenent launch here in SA, lack of Xbox Live, what’s the deal with Nintendo’s local distributor and just games in general.

I find i actually dream about what i am going to blog about, but never actually find the time to actually post.

Is it just me?

First Pictures and Specs of The New Commodore Gaming PC’s

“After years anguishing as a ghost of gaming year
’s gone-by, Commodore is looking to get back into the market with it’s line of high-end custom gaming PC’s. We’ve got an assortment of pictures straight from the all-new Commodore Gaming, plus a sample hardware run-down of it’s top-of-the-line Cxx system.”

Commodore brings back memories good and bad! I had the VIC 20, C64 and the C128. They should still be lying in my dads garage collecting dust! The hours it took to load one game was past by playing cricket or soccer in the street. Then to come back inside only to get some obscure error message cause the tape was faulty or someone pushed stop while you where out. And most of the games I had were all on tape! The stiffy drive came much later but by then the IBM clones where more popular and the early consoles started showing up. These new commodores might be fancier but I doubt they will ever inspire and entire generation gamers.

Windows Apps On a Linux Desktop

So I needed to run a windows app on my notebook but did not see the need to dual-boot when I installed Ubuntu. Next best thing VMware and it is pretty easy to install. But I found instructions that went one step better. Instructions for installing VMware can be found on the Ubuntu Forums. The instructions I used allows me to get windows apps working on my Linux desktop. The instructions can be found here. Once you have installed all the software mentioned in the article all you need to do is start the VM windows and then call the windows apps to your Linux side. Map a drive between the virtual windows and linux and then you can share docs and other files. Perfect for when u only need windows for one app.

Finally, finished Halo 2 and I am quite pleased with myself! Been waiting long for this game, cause Microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided not to release the xbox here in sunny SA. We had to wait for the xbox 360 or cough up some serious dough to import the  xbox and the games. But now that the 360 is available locally and someone was nice enough to lend us the sequel to Halo. So here are my thoughts on a game that everyone else already reviewed to death. I do not have the usual complaints like most other folks, like the pistol sucks, the ending was a let down, etc.

I liked the game because the gameplay was more or less the same to the original. The bad guys moved when I shot at them and shot back! Lots of fun that! No time to worry about why my pistol was knocking them dead after 1 shot. I mean the game had so much other weapons to choose from. The needler in Halo 2 is so cool and when dual wielded you just point shoot and run away.

Playing as the Arbiter is really cool too, cause now we get to understand why the covenant are so hell bent on getting themselves and everyone killed! Talk about a bunch of zealot nutcases! So now we wait for Halo 3 to finish the fight but will the fight really be over cause once the master chief stops the prophet, there’s still the flood to be dealt with and I doubt the flood can be bargained with. So now peace deal and the fight continues!
